At the start of the year, we didn't even realise that there's such a thing as “Outdoor Education” (a subject you can study at university!), let alone that there's a Governing Body - but of course, there is.
“Outdoors Victoria (OV) is the peak body for outdoor education and active outdoor recreation in the state, advocating for and supporting more Victorians to get active outdoors.”
There’s also a Federal Australian organisation covering the whole country - Outdoor Education Australia.
Strangely enough, neither Scouts Australia nor Sailing Australia seem to be involved — although for Scouts at least, it’s all about outdoor education.
Victoria’s Annual Conference is just around the corner - and in a moment of madness, I put together an abstract that channelled our experience in Youth Sailing in Australia with, and on board, Aurora.
And here we go, the conference kicks off tomorrow, and I’ll be presenting about our journey into this field on Friday.
Abstract:
This presentation aims to inform and educate about the various facets of sailing and seeks to provide a chart through the organisations, pathways, journeys, and value that the outdoor activity of sailing can offer to youth from all walks of life. A journey that must be neither exclusive nor expensive, but has the potential to enrich the lives of youth, their parents, and even the wider community.
The presentation also aims to spark a discussion and exchange of experiences and ideas on overcoming the barriers and challenges of youth sailing as an outdoor adventure activity - issues shared by the broader outdoor community.
Sailing’s impact is broader than commonly believed, especially for youth. It serves educational purposes, builds confidence and social skills, and contributes to mental and physical health, sometimes even as a medical treatment. Growing research supports these benefits, showing sailing's significant positive effects on young people. Experiences can cater to various personal interests and aspirations, from casual sailing to competitive races, adventurous expeditions, and career opportunities. Access to sailing extends beyond yacht clubs to organisations like Navy Cadets, Scouts, Sailing Schools, and high schools. But youth sailing faces numerous challenges, including regulatory barriers, cultural and financial hurdles, and a lack of awareness and research.
